The best free iPhone games – part 6

The best free iPhone games – part 6Our compilation of the best free iPhone games just keeps getting bigger and bigger. This sixth instalment takes us up to a total of 24, and there are loads more where they came from, baby.

This edition features little cartoony faces, waves of alien invaders, slicing up your friends with the iPhone's accelerometer and a bowling/shuffleboard/poker hybrid.

The best free iPhone games – part 6Cell Splat

Cell Splat is a lightning-fast test of concentration. The playing area is a 6x7 grid of little cartoon faces of varying colour and shape. At the top of the screen, you’re presented with a specific face (a yellow square, say) and you have to tap any matching faces in the aforementioned grid. It’s game over when the timer hits zero, but you get a little time bonus for each successful match.

Just to throw you off, occasionally you’ll see a grey shape at the top. This means you can tap any matching shape, regardless of colour. Similarly, there are also coloured splats, meaning you can tap any matching colour, regardless of shape.

There are three difficulty levels, but even the Easy mode is bloomin’ hard.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 2.2.1 or later.

Rating: 3/5 after 32 App Store ratings.

The best free iPhone games – part 6InvaderR

TAITO’s official Space Invaders app is a fairly steep £2.99, but this homage from Vorticity is completely free. Nice.

You know the deal by now. You control a little ship at the bottom of the screen, and you have to shoot waves of alien invaders approaching from the top. The invaders move from side to side making them more difficult to hit, and you have to avoid getting hit yourself or it’s game over.

InvaderR is literally unforgiving in that you have just one life. There are no back-up ships and no continues. As such, you’ll realistically survive for just a few minutes, but it’s fun while it lasts.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Rating: 2.5/5 after 55 App Store ratings.

The best free iPhone games – part 6Dr Awesome+

Like another of ngmoco’s titles, MazeFinger Plus, Dr Awesome+ demands that you sign up for/in with a Plus account. But it’s really not a big deal. Quit yer moaning.

Dr Awesome+ is bizarre for two reasons. Firstly because you use the accelerometer to slice up patients and remove portions of their bodies that are “infected”.

Even more bizarre; Dr Awesome+ uses your phone contacts to name the patients. The in-game characters refer to your friends by name, making the game feel surreal and at times unsettling. Check it out.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 2.2.1 or later.

Rating: 3/5 after 674 App Store ratings.

The best free iPhone games – part 610 Pin Shuffle Lite

I’ve resisted including Lite versions of games until now, as that opens a whole can of worms, but 10 Pin Shuffle Lite includes the full version of 10 Pin Poker, one of three modes featured in the full game. Not too shabby.

10 Pin Poker is a combination of 10-pin bowling, Shuffleboard and Five Card Draw Poker. You get one card for every spare you make, and two cards for a strike. At the end of the game, the player with the best hand winds.

It might sound like a fairly odd concept, but 10 Pin Poker is strangely compulsive.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS

Rating: 3.5/5 after 2,857 App Store ratings.
