Five free must-have iPhone apps

Five free must-have iPhone appsAs Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross sang: “The best things in life are free.” Actually, that’s a load of nonsense. Before I go off on a huge tangent and list hundreds of things that are, in fact, not free, let’s just agree that some good stuff doesn't cost a penny.

There’s a plethora of absolute crap for gratis on the App Store, but there’s also tons of useful and fun stuff. Like these guys:

Five free must-have iPhone appsSkype

I can’t imagine life without Skype. I recently did a spot of travelling and Skype was invaluable, allowing me to call home for free whenever I had Wi-Fi. Fire on some Skype credit, and you can make cheapo calls. Even now, back home, it’s my primary method of communication, with calls and instant messaging.

Skype is entirely free over 3G (erm, assuming you have a data allowance) and Wi-Fi.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Five free must-have iPhone appsViber

Viber is a bit like Skype but removes the concept of being online or offline; there’s no need to sign in to use the app. Instead, it integrates with your iPhone’s contact list and highlights friends that also have Viber. You simply make calls as usual and, if you both have Viber, the call is free. Easy.

Viber Media is working on a text feature, and support for the iPad and iPod touch is on the way.

Compatibility: Viber Media recommends using Viber on an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, with iOS 4.

Five free must-have iPhone appsShazam

If you find yourself digging a song in a club and don’t know what it is (or if you’re too drunk to remember), just crank up Shazam and point it at the music. Shazam will tell you what the track is called. Genius.

Shazam has evolved over the years to include a host of new features. You can tag songs, and Shazam compiles tag charts for different countries. It integrates with iTunes to provide 30 second previews of songs, and you can easily buy the mp3 if it takes your fancy.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch (with external microphone) and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Five free must-have iPhone appsFacebook

The mobile variants of Facebook are limited and temperamental, and the desktop version takes about 300 years to load on a phone, even with a decent Wi-Fi connection.

Thank Jehovah, then, for the Facebook app. With the photo uploader, you can take pictures on your phone and instantly share them. You can even use the Chat thingy on your iPhone. Neat.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Five free must-have iPhone appsApple Shooting

Not to be confused with Apple Shooter, which costs 59p, Apple Shooting asks you to shoot an apple off the top of your friend’s head with your trusty bow and arrow. The distance increases as you advance through the game’s 20 levels. If you get fed up, you can always shoot your friend in the head instead. The death animation is absolutely fantastic.

Apple Shooting’s developer, i-Life Mobitech, explains: “If your serious about the adventure you just need a shooting game like Apple Shooting.” I can’t speak for you guys, but I’m nothing if not serious about the adventure.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Ok, so that’d be four must-have apps and a random game that’s probably a bit rubbish. But there are hundreds of free apps on the App Store. I suspect this might be the first in a series of features, yup.

I hate skype! Well, I hate that it doesn't work on Blackberrys :p

On the iPhone, Android and Symbian it's good.
What is Facebook? A game? Sounds daft - probably won't catch on, eh?

What a random app... Apple Shooting?! Hardly a must-have app.

I'd go for NavFree or EverNote instead.

I won't lie to you, I'm not entirely sure how Apple Shooting made it in there. It possibly stretches the term "must-have" a little. Ahem.
