Do free texting websites really work?

A friend told me about a free texting website, but I have forgotten the name. Do they really work? What's the catch?

I've used cbfsms.com in the past, though you can only send two single SMS' in a short space of time. The O2 site does longer messages (444 characters) and gives an allowance of 10 a month: https://www.o2.co.uk/login?dest=http://sendtxt.o2.co.uk/sendtxt/action/compose You don't have to be an O2 customer to use the service.

If you're an Orange customer, you can get 30 free texts a month here too: https://services.orange.co.uk/sam/templates/web/sign_in.htm

As I'm a fast touch-typist, I find the free text sites very handy when in a rush. Though Swype on my Desire HD is proving to be pretty quick too, so I use them less!

They work, though some of them give you so and so many free texts AND then you have to pay. Some are sneaky subscription services, so keep your eyes peeled for the small print.

For many phones/OS's there are apps available. They are usually okay - though some of them, too, are indeed subscription based. Cheaper than regular texts though.

One of the most popular ones is http://www.cbfsms.com if you want to try it out.

In Ireland we get a few hundred free web-texts per months - you can send sms via your network's portal. Until recently I thought the same happened everywhere.
