Fridge Words iOS review

Fridge Words iOS reviewWell whaddya know? Having thoroughly sickened everyone with my word-based prowess in Words With Friends and Letterpress, I’ve finally found a word game at which I’m emphatically rubbish.

I speak of Fridge Words, the latest iOS app from our friends at hit-and-miss developer/publisher Thumbstar. It's great.

While I grew to resent the pressure in Letterpress (it’s worse than freakin’ chess), I’m pleased to report that Fridge Words is just balls-out word-based fun.

Essentially, Fridge Words is a multiplayer word game, playing out on a virtual fridge. You have a bunch of letters at the bottom, with which to make words at the top. Simple.

To keep things interesting, letters are assigned Scrabble-esque scores, while gold and silver letters act as multipliers. There’s also a wee time bonus power-up, and you can buy specific letters with Fridge Words’ in-game currency (if you’re so inclined).

Oh, and on the fridge magnet-based theme, it’s also possible to flip some letters, so an ‘m’ can become a ‘w’, a ‘p’ a ‘d’, and a ‘q’ a ‘b’ – and vice versa.

In terms of gameplay, that’s really all there is to Fridge Words. But you know what? It’s oddly addictive.

Finding opponents in Fridge Words is a breeze. You can find particular friends via their usernames, or hook up via Facebook, or opt to play randoms. If you fancy blasting out some words on your ownsome, you can jump into Quick Play. Sweet.

Gripes? Not a whole lot, to be honest. The playing area at the top can get a tad cramped, and occasionally you’ll lay down letters in the wrong place, or – worse still – break up a high-scoring word with seconds left.

Otherwise, I highly recommend Fridge Words. As I said before, it’s a lot more fun - and less cerebral - than the likes of Letterpress. There is an element of skill, but it’s partly just a case of firing in and seeing what you can come up with. Good stuff.

  • More fun than lots of other word games
  • Crisp, clean UI
  • Easy to find opponents

  • Can get a bit cramped at the top
  • Occasional server issues

Summary: Fridge Words injects a much-needed dose of fun into the word game genre. Oh, and it’s free! Go get it.
