Considering we already had the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 pencilled in for an end-August launch all of three weeks ago, you'd think news that the follow-up Android phablet will in fact appear a day earlier than we thought would be fairly simple stuff.
But no. Official word of the Note 2's August 29 reveal surfaced last night, only to be retracted by Samsung again today – then thanks to some crossed lines of our own we utterly failed to say a word on the subject until now.
Bad day in the office all round then, but we won't lose too much sleep about our own screw-up considering Samsung has made a much bigger pig's ear of the whole thing than us, and makes way more money than we do. Trust me.
Anyway, here's the deal. The big German tech-fest IFA is rolling up in Berlin at the end of the month, and Samsung Mobile has announced one of its official Unpacked events for the 29th.
Given the previous rumours of an end-of-month reveal for the Galaxy Note 2 at precisely that kind of event, it wasn't too difficult to reach the obvious conclusion – even ignoring the stylus plastered slap-bang in the middle of the Unpacked graphic.
With that in mind, a Samsung spokesperson appeared simply to be confirming the obvious when he told Reuters that yes, it was indeed the Galaxy Note 2 that would be breaking cover.
But now it seems the company has backtracked to a position of stubbornly refusing to confirm anything at all, telling AllThingsD that “we cannot disclose information on what will be unveiled” at the event.
Sounds like a bit of a mess, and while our first instinct is just to ignore the confusion and call it confirmed anyway, there is one major reason not to: Samsung already has a "major" event lined up for August 15, and plenty of people are suggesting that in fact that is the Galaxy Note 2's big day in the spotlight.
About the only thing we do know for certain is that rumours that the over-eager spokesperson who spoke to Reuters has vanished in suspicious circumstances are... well... entirely made up.
So there you have it. Samsung may or may not launch the 5.5in Galaxy Note 2 at IFA 2012 in Berlin on August 29, largely depending on whether it actually launches it two weeks before that. No wonder we're confused.
