Probably a software issue, if not, it's pretty easy to replace an S2 camera yourself; it's not part of the main board, if I remember correctly.

Thanks - I should have made it clearer in the post but i have tried a known working camera with the same result (yes you are right the camera is a separate item on the board), also tried updating software to latest version etc but no difference. Just wondered if it's a glitch with these phones? Appreciate the help though.

A bit of a long shot but have you replaced the SD card? Exwife has one and camera and gallery would work properly with an old card. Take card out and all worked perfect

Not a longshot, at all... Could indeed be related. And the reset etc wouldn't have affected the SD card, so if the bug is sitting somewhere on the memory card, it's having a blast...
