giffgaff drops the iPhone 5 ball, no nano-SIMs for months? If you’ve been following my recent rants, you’ll know that I’m currently contemplating the iPhone 5. Do I really want one? Do I need one? Hmm.

In any case, one thing I hadn’t considered is the fact that I’m on giffgaff, and the PAYG no-call-centre network doesn’t yet have nano-SIMs. Nyah! Worse still, it might be months before they catch up.

That’s the word straight from the horse’s mouth, courtesy of a post on the network’s blog titled giffgaff nano SIM update. It does exactly what it says on the tin.

Poor Mark, who only joined giffgaff as Product Manager in July, explains: “We will be supporting the iPhone 5 as soon as we can, but before we go ahead and offer the nanoSIM, there are a number of technical changes that need to be made.

“To be able to get the giffgaff nanoSIM launched as soon as we can, we are looking at alternative distribution methods. If all goes well, we hope to have the SIM cards ready for distribution in the coming months.” Months? Aww, man.

I’ve been discussing the issue with some fellow giffgaffers this afternoon, and consensus seems to be that jumping ship to Three makes the most sense.

Over on the Three Store, they have a number of nano-SIM deals specifically for the iPhone 5. Here are are a couple of ‘em:

  • £6.90PM, 200 mins, 5000 texts, 500MB
  • £12.90PM, 200 mins, 5000 texts, unlimited data

Matt has applied that first deal to a 16GB iPhone 5 at £529. Behold:

  • 12 Months: (6.90x12)+529 = £611.80 (£50.98 per month)
  • 24 Months: (6.90x24)+529 = £694.60 (£28.94 per month)

Considering I’d probably keep the iPhone 5 for two years, that isn’t too shabby. Smell you later, giffgaff. It’s been nice knowing you.

Even if you don't get the i5 seems like the £6.90 3 sim would be better for you if reception is good where you are.
Confused as to what the technical changes they need to make are tbh, wondering how many iphone owners they have on gg anyway.

barrybarryk  Sep. 14, 2012 at 16:33

Blame apple for making you need a completely redundant new sim spec just to net them a few extra licensing dollars

Pondlife  Sep. 14, 2012 at 16:47

I don't think they make any money from the new one.

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 14, 2012 at 16:54

If you assume that you could sell a 1 year old iP5 for £300 and a 2 year old one for £200, it makes the monthly cost £25.98 and £20.61 respectively. Lewis, you might want to add that to your article as the £50.98 per month for 12 months sounds a lot more than it would be in reality once you'd sold the phone :p.

Oh buggeration, I seem to have deleted my rant about GiffGaff. Never mind. I'm sure you know it wasn't going to be nice anyway.

You can amuse yourselves by watching me lose my cyber-temper on here: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Help-Ask-the-community-got-stuck/O2-Top-Up-Voucher-Not-Working-quot-Please-Try-Again-Later-quot/td-p/5880236

And be thrilled and amazed by their sterling customer service < sarcasm >

Pondlife  Sep. 14, 2012 at 20:04

So you aren't tied into them, and you get no end of problems why haven't you left them? I would have.
Oh you changed your mind? Or did they sort it out?

louiselouise  Sep. 14, 2012 at 20:15

Eight days without phone/text/data and waiting. Had one Agent reply to me after 24 hours telling me *how to top up my phone*! Beyond belief. Had to post on another thread saying PLEASE HELP! the other day.

I'm giving them a few days then it's 3 for me...not worth the grief. I'd be very surprised if they didn't take the Worst Company Of The Year crown this year if my experiences are anything to go by. It doesn't seem like it, but I am actually reasonably patient.

Pondlife  Sep. 14, 2012 at 20:17

I think you've been pretty patient I'd have already left them

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 14, 2012 at 20:20

then it's 3 for me
Out of the frying pan and into the fire, when it comes to CS.

louiselouise  Sep. 14, 2012 at 20:23

I was with Orange for something like eight years with barely a problem...I've heard their customer service sucks (3) but talking to a human being sounds much better than stupid-reply-every-24-hours.

GiffGaff's Community threads would be MUCH shorter if Payback wasn't in operation. And (maybe) problems would be resolved much more quickly.

I can recommend T-Mobile's CS, they were very friendly and a little bit Welsh.

Seems like less chance you'd have to bother with their CS though.

Guys, slightly off topic here, but I think louiselouise might be Wonder Woman. You've been warned.

louiselouise  Sep. 14, 2012 at 21:24

I was a comics geek as a kid...and wanted to be a comics illustrator (not quite realised that ambition). :D

The lasso of truth would come in handy, though..

Have you been drinking again? You're making Jan-levels of sense...

...My avatar on the GiffGaff forums (with me throwing generous wobblers everywhere) is of Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. Mind you it's about 3 pixels tall, so you must have great eyesight, Lewis :)

Ahh, yes, now I understand.

On a slightly unrelated note, I think you should just demand your PAC code from GiffGaff and move networks ASAP. Assuming you use the GiffGaff Goody Bag which half of HUKD seems to rave about, it's not that good value anyway.

Moving to Three.

How can any company be so clueless, they have known for months about nano sims and iPhone users are one of their largest user bases. Also with being on a rolling contact they will have a huge % of users upgrading since they are not stuck on a contract.

Giff Gaff will be loosing a massive amount of customers come September 21st, they most likley wont have nano sims till late 2012- early 2013.

Remember to check your signal, Three only have 3G so be careful.

Also, I agree with everything you said. On the basis that GiffGaff is funded by/owned by/run by (I don't know which it is, and I don't really care) O2/Telefonica, there's no decent reason they couldn't get Nano-SIMs in time for the iP5 launch.

Yeah seems I have a problem.

Three only has outdoor coverage in my area, which would be fine if it was just the 3G but it seems that means voice too since Three only has 3G..

Giff Gaff have royally screwed me.

Yup, that also means no texts. Basically, if you want to use your phone as a phone, you'd have to go and stand in your garden, hardly a practical solution.

What are the Nano-SIM deals like on other networks? Also, I believe it's possible (if you're extremely careful) to cut a normal or micro SIM down to become a Nano-SIM. I doubt it's an easy task though, and I guess when you're asking your network for a tenth new SIM, they may get a little p*ssed off :p.

louiselouise  Sep. 15, 2012 at 01:06

I managed to muck up my ("normal" size) GiffGaff SIM by trying to cut it to size, which is why I'm in so much bother now.

Sorry to hijack again, but can anyone kindly direct me to the comparable-to-GiffGaff's-£10-Goodybag 3 deal that was on HUKD quite recently?

I can see this http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Pay_As_You_Go but I'm pretty sure you can get even better if you phone up and ask for some sort of bolt-on. Or maybe it was a SIM-only deal?

T'was a SIMO contract deal, AFAIK. Are you not looking to get a contract? If not, my earlier comments about GG's value aren't so true any more.

louiselouise  Sep. 15, 2012 at 01:23

I'm sure I read that Virgin Mobile are doing a competitive PAYG deal too now, but can't remember the details of that.

Yeh, I'd rather not be tied to a contract. 3 is a bit more expensive but I guess it's insurance against further hassle (that may well be famous last words) :-S

Pondlife  Sep. 15, 2012 at 01:31

Well the 30days 3 contracts aren't much of a tie.
Only Virgin thing I've seen is the one on front page which is also 30day
