Will a giffgaff SIM work in a phone from Tesco?

Are giffgaff and Tesco compatible since their both O2 or is unlocking required?

Your Tesco phone would need to be unlocked first.

Hello, I can confirm that a Giffgaff SIM will work in a Tesco mobile phone, Tesco uses 02, so does Giffgaff, so there should be no problem with just putting it straight in! :)

alex, which is it: you "can confirm" or "should be no problem"?
In Ireland tesco uses o2 and the phones are NOT interchangeable. Meteor use Vf, and phones are NOT interchangeable.
I reckon there may be batches of devices that are not simlocked, but they are the exception...
I could be wrong.

In case the link flops: no, a giffgaff sim won't work in a tesco phone that hasn't been unlocked first.
Again - all networks occasionally rush out a model and an initial batch may be simfree. So, someone may have been lucky with a giffgaff sim in a tesco phone. But that is the exception. Not the rule.

giffgaff works in some tesco phones but it is a gamble.

If the Phone is Unlocked Phone means you can use any GSM Network Sim card in the phone, you cannot use other Sim card in the Locked Phone,You can unlock only GSM Network lock,You cannot unlock CDMA Network locked Phones,You can get the unlock code at here Unlock-free.com/ for Old Phones and unlock it from Network lock.

As far as I know CDMA phones are never locked. They do not even have such a concept. As there is no SIM card in CDMA phone don't see how you can lock it.
GSM component can be locked, but I have not seen this happening either.

Read all the posts above - unfortunately, not ALL Tesco phones take giffgaff SIMs. It's always a gamble. Remember: Networks and Tesco "subsidise" the phones they "sell". In return YOU are supposed to use THEIR network. It's irrelevant that both Tesco and GiffGaff use O2's infrastructure. The relevant bit is this: GiffGaff won't share their profits with Tesco and vice versa. Tesco has NO interest in making another network's SIM work ;)

Can you still return the phone? Just say you have no signal, or you move to Kashmir where O2 doesn't work...
