Why won't GIFs play on my Android browser?

A friend sent a link to a GIF but it doesn't play on my HTC Desire HD, just comes up as a JPEG. Any ideas why? Same link works on my laptop.

Go to browser settings. GIFs are disabled by default. Just enable the plugin.

That is not even helpful. It is not an option anywhere, gifs do not even work. Is it because I am using a Galaxy Player 4.0?

Vidici,
according to the specs your Samsung Galaxy Player 4 supports GIF files. What if you save the GIF and watch it in the Gallery?

You can play them by clicking and downlaoding them on your message window, they will save to your gallery. I had the same problem, I was able to recieve GIFS and able send the ones that I'd recieved, I actually found that any GIFS that i'd made or downloaded I was unable to send. The answer is to resize them to a suitable GIF image size. no bigger than 175 X 175. GIF resizer prooved to be very effective.

***dont forget to add .gif to your newly created gif image.***

why gif images wont play in my gallery?

dandanellenelle,
what phone are you using?
Are you sure the GIF you want to 'play' is animated (not all GIFs are)?
If you use an Android phone, have you enabled GIFs in the browser settings?

If all fails, go to the Play Store and search "GIF player" - there are dozens of few apps that let you play GIF files. Install, and open the image in question in that app.

PS with Buzzfeed, Tumblr etc etc being very popular, how on earth do Google and Apple
make it so hard?

Browser settings where ?

JanSt / MOD  Oct. 2, 2014 at 12:47

jprod,
been years since I had the Desire HD, and I don't know what any major updates did to it.
What OS are you on?
Some 3rd party browsers in the Play Store do support GIF animations - Opera, e.g. (Opera, NOT Opera Mini)....
There are also free GIF player apps in the Play Store.
In some ways, it's not a bad idea to not have GIFs enabled in the browser - makes your browser faster, uses less data, and is more secure - GIFs can hide naughty secrets ;)
Some web pages employ 'invisible' GIFs that do all sorts of naughty stuff - not to be confused with blank 'spacer GIFs' that are merely design tools.

Go to your android market and install android system web view! this should fix your gif problem. and yes you need to enable javascript from the browsers settings

Gralgrathor  May. 21, 2015 at 13:37

Nope. Webview doesn't do it either. I'll try a separate app. By the way, there are no settings in the Android internet browser related to the playing of animated gifs.
