Do you have to be a Gmail user to activate an Android phone? I don't have a Gmail account but I guess I could easily create one!

No, in theory you can use an Android phone without any email account at all. But to use the PlayStore for apps etc etc you must have an email account, and it has to be of the GMail flavour (how's that for 'competition law'? )

I presume that hotmail account is linked to your gmail account? So, what credentials you log in with is relevant - bottomline: you are indirectly still using a gmail account.
