What's a good starter phone for an 11 year-old?

What's a good starter phone for an 11 year-old? Now that he and his friends are starting to go farther from home (to the shopping centre and cinema and whatnot!) it'd be ideal if I could phone him and vice versa.

Looking for a phone that's fairly cheap but not completely rubbish - if such a thing exists! I suspect he'll lose it, but it'll be insured through my bank account anyway.

Thanks!

Okay, why not start at the start: what do YOU want?
You make it sound as though this is just about staying in touch - him being able to say, "I'm late - the dog chewed my bicycle's tires"...
You don't want him to have a smartphone, right? As you say: he's 11, he'll lose it, and his mates are gonna turn it into a contest of who's-got-the-bestest...
Any ordinary Nokia or Samsung with a keypad will do...

If it's a smartphone you were thinking of, let us know. But imho that'd be madness. But that is just me :)

Okay, the Nokia 220 is a good old fashioned phone. Great battery life, FM radio and, if you want, colourful....

Also, I'll post a link to an app that I think could be very useful.
https://www.cabinapp.com/

It allows you to see people's location in your group, message and share to-do lists and reminders.
