For our money, Google has made a bit of a dog’s breakfast of the whole Nexus thing, particularly as pertains to the Nexus 6’s UK release date. What do you mean they rushed the launch on account of the iPhone 6?! You maniac.
Confusing things further, it’s not clear if the Google Nexus 5 is hanging around for the foreseeable, or simply waiting for the Nexus 6 to arrive properly before buggering off.
We'd assumed the year-old Nexus 5 would stick around for a good while, given the way Google describes its refreshed line-up on Google Play.
HTC’s Google Nexus 9 tablet is “For movers and shakers”; Motorola’s Nexus 6 phablet offers “Space to explore”; and LG’s Nexus 5 smartphone lets you “Capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways.”
And let's not forget the decidedly mixed reaction to the Google Nexus 6. Yeah, it has top-of-the-range specs, but a 6in display? SIX INCHES? As such, it’d certainly make sense for the Google Nexus 5 to serve as a smaller alternative.
However, XDAdevelopers member RedBlueGreen shares an email from Google Play concerning the Nexus 5 replacement process, and it sounds like the phone is on its way out.
"I inform you that we don't offer new brand replacement as they aren't available and they won't be produced anymore,” writes ‘M’.
Of course Google hasn't said anything official, so we only have M’s word to go on at the moment, but we’re not sure why he/she would bother making up a lot of nonsense.
That being the case, it’s a 6in smartphone or nothing. Well played, Google. Well played.
