Google launches ‘Google Store’ for hardware, officially ditches Nexus 5

Team Mountain View has given its Google Play Devices section an overhaul, spinning it off into an entirely separate entity called Google Store, but aesthetics aside, there’s one very notable difference.

Browsing the Phones section, in particular, you have the choice of the Google Nexus 6, and, er, that’s about the size of it. RIP Google Nexus 5.

Chinese smartphone maker to build the next Nexus? (Updated)

Lewis Curdie  Feb. 27, 2015 at 10:30

Over the years we’ve seen various big names take the Nexus reins: HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Asus… But Google might be considering a change of pace with the next Nexus smartphone.

Imagine, in the not too distant future, a Nexus smartphone made by one of the lesser-known (in the west), Chinese manufacturers.

Google Nexus 5: get it while you can

Google Nexus 5: get it while you can

Lewis Curdie  Dec. 12, 2014 at 11:00

With the Google Nexus 6 having arrived earlier this year, 2013’s Google Nexus 5 has found a nice little niche as an affordable former flagship, currently going for as little as £239.99.

There seems to be some confusion in the Google camp, but the upshot is: if you’re thinking of grabbing a Nexus 5, don’t hang about.

Just yesterday I penned Android Lollipop 5.0: when will my phone be updated? and it turns out the good people at Android were firing out a tweet almost simultaneously.

Android Lollipop 5.0 is now officially making its way through the airwaves to ‘most Nexus devices’. More below!

Motorola Moto G (2014) Lollipop update rolling out now

LG proudly declared it’d be the first manufacturer to start serving the Android Lollipop 5.0 update, starting this week with the G3 in Poland.

Motorola might well dispute that "first" claim, but in any case, Motorola Moto G (2014) handsets are already starting to see the Lollipop update.

Are Google Nexus 5 Android Lollipop battery issues delaying the update?

Are Google Nexus 5 Android Lollipop battery issues delaying the update?

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 6, 2014 at 12:00

Android Lollipop 5.0 was made official more than three weeks ago, and while Google promised it’d make its way to existing devices – like the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 – in the “coming weeks”, there’s still no sign of the update.

The issue tracker for the Android L Developer Preview suggests that the Google Nexus 5, in particular, is suffering from a mysterious battery-draining issue, which could explain the hold-up.

Google Nexus 5: not hanging around after all?

Google Nexus 5: not hanging around after all?

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 4, 2014 at 12:00

For our money, Google has made a bit of a dog’s breakfast of the whole Nexus thing, particularly as pertains to the Nexus 6’s UK release date. What do you mean they rushed the launch on account of the iPhone 6?! You maniac.

Confusing things further, it’s not clear if the Google Nexus 5 is hanging around for the foreseeable, or simply waiting for the Nexus 6 to arrive properly before buggering off.

Google Nexus 6 vs. Google Nexus 5: what’s the difference?

The long-rumoured Google Nexus 6 is finally a reality. Of sorts. That is to say it’s been announced, though it hasn’t been released just yet. US pre-orders open on October 29, Wednesday of next week, while it’s seemingly “not available” in the UK. Zuh?

Anyway! Even in the absence of, y’know, the actual phone, we’re still in a position to compare specs; rather than a modest upgrade, the Google Nexus 6 is in fact a radically different phone. Full story below.

Android 5.0 Lollipop made official

Android 5.0 Lollipop made official

Google confirmed its existence at the end of June (as if there was any doubt that a KitKat successor would touch down in autumn), and since then we’ve been referring to it simply as Android L or Android 5.0.

Lemon Meringue Pie (LMP) appeared to be the internal codename, and I had my suspicions that it might be Android Lion (as in the Nestle chocolate bar), but it’s officially now Android 5.0 Lollipop. Death to corporate sponsorship, I guess.

Google Nexus 6 conveniently pictured in the wild

People in tin hats are rightly dubious about “accidental” smarphone leaks, and here I’m allying myself with the crazy crew and demanding cynically with a raise of the eyebrows: “Really? Really?”

Some guy was using what appears to be a Google Nexus 6 on a train, and someone just happened – just happened – to be on hand to surreptitiously take a picture of it. Wow, what luck!
