Chinese smartphone maker to build the next Nexus? (Updated)

Over the years we’ve seen various big names take the Nexus reins: HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Asus… But Google might be considering a change of pace with the next Nexus smartphone.

Imagine, in the not too distant future, a Nexus smartphone made by one of the lesser-known (in the west), Chinese manufacturers.

Just yesterday I penned Android Lollipop 5.0: when will my phone be updated? and it turns out the good people at Android were firing out a tweet almost simultaneously.

Android Lollipop 5.0 is now officially making its way through the airwaves to ‘most Nexus devices’. More below!

Android 5.0 Lollipop made official

Android 5.0 Lollipop made official

Google confirmed its existence at the end of June (as if there was any doubt that a KitKat successor would touch down in autumn), and since then we’ve been referring to it simply as Android L or Android 5.0.

Lemon Meringue Pie (LMP) appeared to be the internal codename, and I had my suspicions that it might be Android Lion (as in the Nestle chocolate bar), but it’s officially now Android 5.0 Lollipop. Death to corporate sponsorship, I guess.

Google Nexus 9 marks HTC’s newfound ‘commitment’ to tablets

Bit of an international story here, with words from New York being relayed to a publication in Taiwan, and fired back over here to the United Kindgoms of Liz Regina.

Year-on-year quarterly tablet shipments fall for the first time ever

Gawd, it’s all doom and gloom at the moment, eh? Samsung is having a rough time at the top, and HTC continues to struggle.

Now we’re turning the spotlight on “tablet PCs”, and hearing that shipments in Q1 2014 were less than those recorded 365 days prior – the first time that’s ever happened in tablet land.

Google Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 10 to get Android L

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 3, 2014 at 14:00

Team Mountain View talked up Android L at Google I/O 2014 last week, but one thing missing from the three-hour keynote (zzz) was a list of fully supported Nexus devices.

The Google Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) were definitely A-OK, but now it seems that the 2012 range is good for Android L, too.

After last year’s disappointment, we’re not getting our hopes up too much for new hardware at Google I/O 2014, but the rumour mill is pretty persistent about one particular device.

The Google Nexus 8 will reportedly be built by HTC, and it’s supposedly been captured on candid camera.

Google Nexus 6 and Nexus 8 mentioned in code

The evidence for Google’s new Nexus devices continues to mount, and again we’re seeing vague mentions in code format.

This time around we’re referring to the “Nexus 6” and “Nexus 8”, thought to be an LG-built smartphone and HTC-manufactured tablet respectively.

Remember the Google Nexus 8 tablet? It briefly appeared on Android.com last year before being airbrushed out of existence.

Well, the Google Nexus 8 rumours are back, baby, and this time we’re told it’ll be manufactured by none other than… HTC?

Google Nexus 7 gets HDMI dock and PW100 Wireless Charging Stand

Lewis Curdie  Feb. 28, 2014 at 14:00

When, in my mind, is wireless charging not wireless charging? When it involves plugging a charger into the wall (y’know, using wires and a plug), and requires physical contact with the device.

But hey! That’s as good as technology gets at present, and that’s what Google is going with in its Asus PW100 Wireless Charging Stand. There’s also a plain old Asus Dock for Nexus 7 (2013).
