Poor old Google seems to have a newfound propensity for “accidentally” leaking its wares before they’re officially announced. The spanking new Google Nexus 5 appeared in a promotional video for KitKat Android 4.4 prior to launch, while an employee left his top-secret handset unguarded in a bar. “Oops”.
Similarly, courtesy of none other than android.com, a still of a young lady holding a mysterious tablet device is currently doing the rounds. Are we looking at the Google Nexus 8?
So, either Google and the Android team are utterly incompetent and incapable of keeping things under wraps, or they’ve planted a cheeky Easter egg in an attempt to create a bit of buzz.
In any case, what we’re looking at is a device with significantly less bezel than the Google Nexus 7. It’s also running KitKat Android 4.4, and appears to be slightly larger than Asus’ 7in tablet.
A Google Nexus 8 would of course serve as a kick in the privates of Apple, with the iPad mini measuring 7.9in diagonally. Price would be crucial, but it’s probably safe to say the Google Nexus 8 wouldn’t break the proverbial bank.
Both the Google Nexus 5 and Google Nexus 7 2013 are very much official, but there’s still some confusion over the rest of the Nexus line-up. The rumoured Asus Nexus 10 failed to materialise last week, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not happening, while LG is tipped to steal the Nexus 7 contract next year.
