Does GPS count as data?

I’m slightly confused… my data and Wifi are off but GPS works. Does it cost??

No, GPS does not count. This is worked out by pinging broadcast towers.

GPS does not use data, however, aGPS uses network celltowers to pinpoint your location. That does use a little bit of data. But it won't be that much. However, Google maps and similar apps use a LOT of data to download maps as you move along.

Adding to JanSt's reply, Google maps are cached locally on the phone, so you may see them even when WiFi and Data are off. This is why most GPS apps charge, as they come with maps.

But, to cache maps they first need to be downloaded. Google's improved caching reduces downloads, it doesn't eliminate all data traffic ;)
