Can you get a second hand phone unlocked?

If you buy a second hand phone and it's on a particular network, will the network unlock it for you even though the contract was in someone else's name?

Vodafone always unlocks their phones free of charge. You can do it as long as you have prepaid SIM. (They will send you unlock code via text message and you have to be on their network).

Other networks vary. With 3 Mobile asking £15 for unlock and O2 sometimes doing it free of charge. You must have contract/prepaid SIM to get unlock code.

Keep in mind that you cannot unlock iPhones and it might be easier to have phone unlocked by different means.
