How hard is it to unlock a network locked phone?

How hard is it to unlock a phone that's locked to a particular network?
Can anything go wrong? Could the phone be 'bricked'?

Depends on which phone and what unlock technique you're using.

Code off eBay, you'll be fine no bricks.

Through something like Wotan Server (like 2011 Xperia) then you've got a small chance of brick if you go wrong.

Also, like Jan St says, some can be unlocked with apps, like a lot of the Galaxy phones that store their lock status in the memory (in the EFS partition).

So, depends on which phone and which methods you're using.

Well, if you have the correct network unlock code and follow the input instructions, nothing will go wrong.
iPhones are usually unlocked via a small update through iTunes; and it's a simple message of 'back-up' and sync...
There are various other methods that differ frommodel to model... Unlock apps for some BBs and Galaxies can be found in the official appstores.
Generally: worst thing that happens: your phone's still locked.
