We can’t help but feel a bit sorry for those other operating systems. Y’know, the ones that aren’t Android or iOS. Let’s face it, Windows Phone is miles behind, and there’s reportedly just one BlackBerry 10 handset in the works.
However, despite Google and Apple’s continued dominance, HP’s new(ish) CEO, Meg Whitman, reckons the new open source webOS will be the best thing ever. Well, she would say that, wouldn’t she?
Speaking to CRN, Meg does a good job of sounding confident about the future of webOS, and insists HP has a "clear vision". Heck, surely it can’t go as wrong as last time – with the HP TouchPad and Pre 3 pulava.
Meg says: "There will be some people who will not love that vision, and then there are people who are very excited about this vision, and what it can mean for an alternative, open-source operating system that has some real strengths to it."
As we’ve heard before, HP ain’t done with tablets, however they’ll be flavoured with Windows 8 sauce. "We have to have a tablet offering," reckons Meg. “We will be back in that business. We’re coming back into the market with a Windows 8 tablet, first on an x86 chip and then maybe on an ARM chip.”
How excited should we be about webOS? Very. Check it: "We’re going to build another operating system that has huge advantages, in my view, over iOS, which is a closed system, [and] Android, which is incredibly fragmented and may ultimately be more closed with [Google's] acquisition of Motorola Mobility."
Time will tell, I guess. Good luck, chaps.
