HP has announced it's ready to give the whole smartphone thing another go, promising a device that'll offer a “differentiated experience” to consumers.
And after its well-documented misadventures with webOS last time around, expectations are that it'll play it safe this time and turn to Android instead.
HP Asia exec Yam Su Yin confirmed the news to The Indian Express this week, though she failed to go into any real detail.
“The answer is yes but I cannot give a timetable,” she responded when asked directly if smartphones figured in HP's plans. “It would be silly if we say no. HP has to be in the game.”
This despite CEO Meg Whitman saying late last year that it had no plans to launch a smartphone in 2013.
HP's first attempt at smartphones, it's safe to say, didn't end well. After splurging more than $1bn on Palm and its much-liked webOS platform a couple of years ago, its webOS smartphone range never got off the ground and it ended up cutting its losses and pulling out of the mobile market altogether.
Those past failures don't seem to have dampened HP's enthusiasm, however, and Yam dismissed suggestions that there isn't enough room for another major player in the crowded Android smartphone market.
“Being late you have to create a different set of propositions,” she argued. “There are still things that can be done. It's not late. When HP has a smartphone, it will give a differentiated experience.”
Bold words indeed, then again this is the same company that said it planned to be “better than number one” in the tablet market when it launched the ill-fated TouchPad a couple of years ago.
The point is a “differentiated experience” doesn't necessarily mean a good one.
