LG picks up webOS, mostly for smart TVs... at first
It’s been a strange road for webOS, initially developed by Palm and later snapped up by Hewlett Packard, and yielding such hits as the, er, HP Pre 3 and HP TouchPad.
HP pulled the plug on webOS some 18 months ago, and now it’s been bought by none other than LG. What the fu…?

Good afternoon to you. Apparently I didn’t make it clear enough in The best smartphones of 2011? Yes and no… part 1 that I was simply listing a synopsis of each and every Mobot handset review from 2011, in plain old chronological order. Also, when I say “part 1”, it’s perfectly safe to assume there’s a second part in the proverbial pipeline. You maniacs.
I listed a total of 18 devices in part 1, and not one – including the Samsung Galaxy S II and iPad 2 – managed a perfect 5/5. Evidently that Dave Oliver is a tough gentleman to please. Will we see a cheeky 5/5 in part 2? I really don’t know. Personally, I’m hoping for a 1/5. Let’s rock!

Ahh, webOS. What a tangled web you weave. After being apparently ditched by HP, there were rumours that Amazon, Facebook and/or Samsung might be interested. Ultimately, however, HP announced that it’d make webOS open source.
It remains to be seen how much third-party interest there’ll be in webOS. HP recently said it had no immediate plans to release a new Pre smartphone or TouchPad tablet, but it’s not ruling anything out.

A few months ago we reported that HP was planning “one last run” of its TouchPad tablet, after selling ‘em off for ridiculous cheapness. Alas, as we exclusively discovered, the last batch will be US-only. Bah.
Now TechCrunch reports that the final run is set for liftoff. HP will flog the last of its TouchPads on eBay from Sunday.

HP decided to call time on its mobile (mis)adventures some time ago, but it still hasn't figured out what to do with webOS, the operating system it paid a small fortune for less than two years ago.
Some have suggested HP will hang on to the platform, while others reckon it'll sell, and now new HP CEO Meg Whitman has confirmed that a final decision on the matter will be taken in the next two weeks.

HP’s bigwigs have been jawing about Windows 8 and tablets and webOS during the company’s third-quarter earnings thingy.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Hewlett Packardians do “going forward”, now that the Pre 3 and TouchPad and webOS are all sleeping with the fishes. Sort of. Oh, how different things were back in February.

Way back in June, four bloomin’ months ago, I prepared the first draft of my Christmas list, with a cheeky Christmas list addendum following a few days later. Five devices I asked for in total, and the list makes for quite comical – and dare I say interesting – reading.
If I were to write another Christmas list right now, I don’t think any of the aforementioned five would appear on it. Luckily I included a disclaimer in my feature and reserved the right to change my mind entirely. Phew.

You can imagine how gutted one might feel having shelled out £400 for an HP TouchPad, only to discover days or weeks later that the price had been slashed to £89. Bummer.
But there’s good news for those who pinned their hopes and dreams on webOS prior to HP’s “discontinuation” announcement. The manufacturer has revealed a cheeky li’l refund program.

You might remember a few weeks ago there was some confusion about the processor in the HP Pre 3. The official Pre 3 website briefly suggested 1.2GHz dual-core, but quickly changed it back to 1.4GHz single-core as originally announced.
Now Orange has muddied the proverbial waters with a spanking new support page for the HP Pre 3. Under the specs section it states that the Pre 3 will have – you guessed it – a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. What the…?

“Where the hell is the HP Pre 3?” is the question on many people’s lips. Mostly people who are eager to get their hands on the Pre 3. It was first revealed at a high profile event back in February, almost six months ago. Jeez.
Play.com, for one, reckons it’ll be here before the end of the month, and now HP is telling developers to crank up the app work.
