OK, so just last week, we were musing over what on earth has been going on with this Huawei Ascend D Quad that we got a tantalising glimpse of at MWC.
Well we can now reveal that the much-delayed handset is finally set to touch down across Europe in October after making its debut in China next month.
The Ascend D Quad certainly looks the part on paper what with its mammoth 4.5in screen and homebrew quad-core processor. And as we suspected it's that CPU that's been causing all the problems.
Huawei consumer business group CEO Yu Chengdong is only willing to say that the processor had hit “technical problems”, and as a result mass production is only expected to get under way in August.
It's a shame, really, especially in the light of Huawei's very public promise at the start of the year that it would be targeting European markets in a big way in 2012. While the Ascend D Quad wowed us at MWC, sadly it is looking less and less special with each day that passes.
Sure, it'll run Ice Cream Sandwich - but while that was a big deal back in February, it isn't now, and come October it'll be hardly worth a mention at all. And if it wasn't already going to struggle against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X, there'll also (probably) be the small matter of an iPhone 5 to contend with.
