There are some concepts in the mobile world that just hit the right keywords to get people's ears pricking up. One of them is “Facebook phone”.
Why do we say that? Here's why: during Mobile World Congress a couple of months ago, we all went moggy when HTC announced the ChaCha and the Salsa, its pair of Facebook phones. Now we hear that one of them at least will arrive in the UK in June. But be honest: how often have you actually thought about the ChaCha in the last couple of months?
Now we're certainly not criticising the ChaCha as a phone. It's fairly inoffensive for the most part, even if the design isn't quite our own cup of tea. And we're willing to forgive the fact that HTC stubbornly refused to let us actually touch the thing, keeping it safe in its glass display for the entire show.
At the time, pretty much everyone took that to mean the ChaCha wasn't ready, and the fact that it'll only touch down in June pretty much confirms that.
But let's leave all that aside and concentrate on the facts: T-Mobile has been the first network to blink and stick up a Coming Soon page for the ChaCha. It's a bit thin on detail, though, saying only that the launch date is June 2011, and reminding us that it has a 5-megapixel camera, a dedicated Facebook button and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
Still, for now that's enough detail to be getting on with, and reminds us that the ChaCha wasn't actually just a dream and that it is in fact still on its way at some point.
