Did the HTC Desire Z get Gingerbread?

Yes, it did get it as far as I'm aware.
The Desire has only 512mb of internal memory, whereas the Desire Z has 1.5gb, so Gingerbread fitted far more comfortably onto the Desire Z, than it did onto the original Desire.
