Should my HTC Desire HD lock when I'm on a call?

My HTC Desire HD **doesn't** lock when I'm on a call, so I keep pressing things with my face!! Is there an option to change this somewhere??

I know the Desire HD had Proximity Sensor problems so check that your phone is up-to-date with the latest kernel.

Make sure when you're holding your phone during a call, the speaker is pressed against your ear, this will trigger the proximity sensor (if it is working properly) and deactivate the screen and buttons. The buttons will reactivate when you move it away from your face if say you wanted to pull up someone else's email address to tell the person you're currently talking to.
