The changing size of smartphones

At some point while sitting on the couch last night I found myself thinking: ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to see some sort of graph depicting the change in smartphone sizes over the years?’ and quickly set about creating the chart you see before you.

Specifically I looked at the flagships for Apple, Samsung (Galaxy S and Galaxy Note), LG, Motorola, HTC and Sony from 2010 to 2013, and the results are – dare I say – quite interesting.

HTC Desire Q = HTC Desire U = single-core HTC Desire X

The HTC Desire series used to command a modicum of respect via the original Desire, alongside the HTC Desire HD, HTC Desire S and the QWERTY-boasting HTC Desire Z.

Alas, today the Desire name is synonymous with entry-level handsets and/or emerging markets, and the HTC Desire Q is the latest to hit Taiwan. It is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the HTC Desire U.

We’ve been told not to expect any more HTC One devices this year, but you’ve still got room in your pocket for a couple of new Desires, right?

Yep, we’re hearing that HTC is about to add two new models to its painfully swollen Desire series, specifically the Desire P and Desire Q.

Land of the Giants(martphones) – part 2

Land of the Giants(martphones) – part 2

Two things smartphone manufacturers are currently obsessed with: firstly, making devices that are anorexically thin, and also churning out wares with seriously massive displays.

Over a year ago, back in September 2011, I penned Land of the Giants(martphones), and I figured I’d revisit the idea, taking a look at the continuing trend for phones bordering on tablet territory (hence the term “phablet”).

But wait! Dry those tears. You can put Ice Cream Sandwich on your HTC Desire HD right now, thanks to the good folks at xda-developers. Huzzah!

HTC explains Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich decision

It was, then it wasn’t, then it was, and then it most definitely wasn’t. I’m rambling, of course, about the HTC Desire HD being upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0).

As you’d expect, there’s been a fair bit of backlash following the announcement, and HTC has come clean with a “further explanation”.

HTC: no Ice Cream Sandwich for the Desire HD after all

HTC: no Ice Cream Sandwich for the Desire HD after all

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 23, 2012 at 16:00

Well, this is a bit of a farce. Last week, Canadian network Telus said it had scrapped plans to bring Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) to the good old HTC Desire HD.

An HTC spokesperson quickly moved to stress that the manufacturer’s Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich plans were “still on schedule”, but now… I’m sure you can see where this is going.

Holy. Mother. Of fug. The artist formerly known as the HTC Ace is two years old in October, but us faithful HTC Desire HD owners have continually been promised a slice of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0).

However, according to Canadian network Telus, Ice Cream Sandwich for the HTC Desire HD ain’t happenin’.

HTC updates Ice Cream Sandwich schedule

We recently got an update on the Motorola Ice Cream Sandwich saga, and now HTC is teasing its users with fresh Android 4.0 info.

There’s good news in the form of more specific dates, but bad news in that some HTC devices won’t get a taste of delicious Ice Cream Sandwich after all.

HTC Desire HD: Get Sony XLoud Engine

HTC Desire HD: Get Sony XLoud Engine

Joe Hindy  Feb. 23, 2012 at 12:30

The HTC Desire HD is getting a little old, but that doesn't mean it isn't receiving development love from the community. One of the more recent modifications to the aging Android phone is the porting of the Sony XLoud Engine. For many who don't know, the Sony XLoud Engine is an audio enhancement engine that allows for clearer, louder and higher quality audio in a very similar manner to Beats Audio. The difference being, of course, that you can actually get Sony XLoud on your HTC Desire HD.
