I'd suggest keeping the phone in a case - not ideal (like a real lense cover, HTC ), but it does add a bit of protection. Also:...sorry, no "also"

This might help, here's a link to info about the clear cover on the camera, beware though remove at your own risk, no-one is responsible for any actions you do to your HTC, only yourself

I removed the (horrible) plastic lens from the back cover quite some time ago and the lens has been fine ever since. The difference in the quality of photographs is massive. The plastic lens cover just pushes out from behind quite easily

I agree with marcowil1.
I'm on my second cover and no matter what, the battery cover lens always gets scratched. If i'm serious about taking pics I remove the batter cover completely then put it back when i'm finished. If I know I'm going to be taking lots of snaps then I use my old cover with the lens pushed out then put the more recent cover back when i'm done.
Not perfect but something I'll definitely keep my eye out for come upgrade time.
