What's the HTC Desire like for texting?

Is the on-screen keyboard good? I'm wondering if I should get a HTC Desire Z instead, or maybe an HTC Desire HD coz the screen's bigger...

Get down to Carphonewarehouse or somewhere similar and ask to give it a try.
I find it just fine. You can turn the phone to 'landscape' and use the keyboard that way. Or if you really, really like the old phone keypad style of texting you can still use that. I would strongly recommend giving swiftkey a try. It works out common phrases and starts suggesting options for what your typing. You can even get reports on how much your productivity has increased.

Just to.prove the point I've typed this bit in from said phone. Works just fine IMO but I can see it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea

I have a Desire Z and I hardly ever slide the keyboard out.

I find it useful for writing long emails but for short text entry the onscreen kb is good enough.

I like using SlideIt which is a swype style keyboard and find it really easy on my desire. I also use HandcentSMS rather than the normal messaging service.
