HTC bigwig: Samsung wielded component supply as ‘competitive weapon’

The mobile industry is a funny old thing, with bitter rivals often providing crucial components and what not. Heck, just look at Apple and Samsung, the world’s top two smartphone manufacturers.

Speaking of Samsung, HTC’s North Asia president, Jack Tong, explains how the Taiwanese manufacturer got burned by the South Koreans back in 2010 with the HTC Desire.

HTC Desire Q = HTC Desire U = single-core HTC Desire X

The HTC Desire series used to command a modicum of respect via the original Desire, alongside the HTC Desire HD, HTC Desire S and the QWERTY-boasting HTC Desire Z.

Alas, today the Desire name is synonymous with entry-level handsets and/or emerging markets, and the HTC Desire Q is the latest to hit Taiwan. It is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the HTC Desire U.

HTC Desire P and Desire Q on the way (sigh)

We’ve been told not to expect any more HTC One devices this year, but you’ve still got room in your pocket for a couple of new Desires, right?

Yep, we’re hearing that HTC is about to add two new models to its painfully swollen Desire series, specifically the Desire P and Desire Q.

Land of the Giants(martphones) – part 2

Land of the Giants(martphones) – part 2

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 23, 2012 at 13:00

Two things smartphone manufacturers are currently obsessed with: firstly, making devices that are anorexically thin, and also churning out wares with seriously massive displays.

Over a year ago, back in September 2011, I penned Land of the Giants(martphones), and I figured I’d revisit the idea, taking a look at the continuing trend for phones bordering on tablet territory (hence the term “phablet”).

HTC contemplating Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade plans

Lewis Curdie  Oct. 19, 2011 at 16:00

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is kicking back in Ice Cream Sandwich town, but there’s still a great deal of uncertainty concerning which other Android smartphones will get the ICS treatment and when.

HTC, for one, is currently absorbing the Ice Cream Sandwich unveiling and contemplating how to go about the potentially buggersome process of updating its phones.

Gingerbread for HTC Desire arrives, not for public consumption

Gingerbread for HTC Desire arrives, not for public consumption

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 1, 2011 at 16:00

Back in mid-June, HTC disappointed faithful Desire owners with the announcement that there wasn’t “enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience”.

Needless to say that resulted in a near riot, but HTC quickly backtracked and announced that it was on the case. True to its word, Gingerbread is now served, but HTC warns that it’s for “expert users” only, and won’t be released OTA.

HTC phones living 10 minutes in the future?

HTC phones living 10 minutes in the future?

Lewis Curdie  Jun. 21, 2011 at 19:00

As a couple of Mobotniks recently observed, some HTC phones appear to be intermittently running 10 minutes fast. Indeed, I had a similar problem with my HTC Desire HD a few weeks ago, though it seems to be ok now. How bizarre.

Fone Home has touted - and dismissed - a handful of theories, but ultimately it looks like the fault was with HTC.

Now the HTC Desire IS getting Gingerbread after all

Now the HTC Desire IS getting Gingerbread after all

Martin James  Jun. 16, 2011 at 09:10

We're not quite sure what to make of this one. Just yesterday, we – along with the rest of the mobile tech press – reported that the much-loved HTC Desire won't be getting an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Just 24 hours later, however, and it's all change: HTC reckons the Desire will be getting its helping of Gingerbread after all.

No Android Gingerbread for HTC Desire

No Android Gingerbread for HTC Desire

Martin James  Jun. 15, 2011 at 10:00

It hasn't been the best month for the HTC Desire, has it? First we're told that chances are the last shipment of stock has arrived in the country, suggesting HTC will soon stop selling it, and now we're hearing that plans to update the handset to Android 2.3 Gingerbread have been scrapped.

It wasn't for lack of trying, though, HTC has revealed. Its engineers have reportedly been doing their best but have admitted defeat, leaving Desire owners stuck on Froyo for good.
