We still don't know exactly why HTC pulled the plug on the rumoured HTC One (M8) Prime last month, but it seems it hasn't given up on the idea altogether.
According to everyone's favourite tipster @evleaks, Q1 of 2015 will see the arrival of not only the next-generation M9 but an M9 Prime spinoff too, and the Prime could actually be the first to hit the shelves.
There's no indication as to where the information is coming from, and this far ahead of time it doesn't matter, as there's every chance HTC's plans might change – that's what happened to the M8 Prime after all, and not long before its expected launch either.
If the news is accurate, what it does mean is that HTC is happy to continue committing to just a single flagship release per year, not just this year with the M8, but next year too from the looks of things.
Considering both Sony and Samsung are increasingly moving towards a six-month flagship refresh cycle, hopefully that decision doesn't come back to haunt HTC.
That aside, we're not sure what the point would be of launching the M9 Prime before the handset it's supposedly based on. Even if HTC went for a completely different name to keep the “One” moniker aside for the actual HTC One, it's hard to see how launching the so-called Prime first would make any sense.
