Why does my HTC Wildfire still use data when I’m not browsing?

My phone seems to use data even when I’m not online. Why does this happen? I’m using an HTC Wildfire.

Yep, the joys of Android. It's syncing with Google and whatever email account you have; it checks for apps updates in the market; twitter; facebook; and whatever app you installed - it potentially 'dials home'. In 'settings' under accounts check if you have background updates enabled etc etc - familiarise yourself with the 'hidden' talents of Android (remember: useful as they are, Google is first and foremost the world's biggest advertising company ;).

I had no idea all that stuff went on happening. :| I'll have a good look through my settings and see what I can change.

If your worried about using too much data (on PAYG, etc) then go to Menu-Settings-Wireless and networks-Mobile networks-Enable always-on mobile and uncheck the box
