There were rumours last year that we might see a balls-out Facebook phone at Mobile World Congress, but ultimately we had to make do with the HTC Salsa and ChaCha.
The social networking giant denies to this day that it’s working on a Facebook phone, but sources of AllThingsD beg to differ. Supposedly Team Zuckerberg and HTC are working on the… Buffy?
The sources reveal that the phone is indeed named after the Vampire Slayer, and that it’ll run a modified version of Android – specially tailored for maximum Facebook integration. It’ll also support HTML5 apps.
Apparently HTC was only recently chosen to build the Buffy, and Samsung was also in the running at one point. Interessante. As such, it could be another 12-18 months before we see the proverbial fruits.
A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on Buffy specifically, and whipped out ye olde hymn sheet: “Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social.
“We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”
Screw Facebook, I’m still waiting for a Bebo phone.
