For many Mobotniks’ money, the Huawei Ascend G300 is easily the Best Smartphone Under £100, offering entirely decent specs for a decidedly wallet-friendly price.
However, HTC’s low-end offering of the year (lower still than the recent HTC One V) is the HTC Desire C, and it’s now kicking around the £100 mark too. While the good Desire name might be enough to tempt some consumers, is it actually better – technically – than the Huawei Ascend G300?
Let’s break it down in an old school way, and take a look at the individual specs and that.
Huawei Ascend G300: 4in IPS LCD (480 x 800, 233 PPI)
HTC Desire C: 3.5in capacitive (320 x 480, 165 PPI)
Optimum screen size is subjective, but we reckon most people would opt for 4in given the choice. We’re only talking about half an inch, after all, so you could hardly call the Huawei Ascend G300 “too big”. Also, the increased PPI and presence of IPS make the Huawei Ascend G300 the clear (pun intended) winner here.
Huawei Ascend G300: 5MP rear camera with autofocus and flash, no secondary
HTC Desire C: 5MP rear camera, no autofocus or flash, no secondary
Man, I remember the dark – literally dark – days of using a smartphone without a flash. Bad times. Huawei Ascend G300 wins again.
Huawei Ascend G300: 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
HTC Desire C: 600MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
Do I really need to say it? Man, 600MHz is pretty freakin’ modest, by any measure. Another victory for the Huawei Ascend G300.
Huawei Ascend G300: 2.5GB user accessible internal storage, microSD slot (up to 32GB), 512MB RAM
HTC Desire C: 4GB internal storage, microSD slot (up to 32GB), 512MB RAM
Technically, a small victory for the HTC Desire C, though you’re probably gonna want to shove a 32GB microSD card in either phone, right?
Huawei Ascend G300: 140g, 10.5mm thick
HTC Desire C: 100g, 12.3mm thick
How odd. The Huawei Ascend G300 is a couple of millimetres thinner than the HTC Desire C, but almost 50% heavier. The HTC Desire C is pretty freakin’ light; it’s not like the Huawei Ascend G300 is a big fat chunker or anything.
Winner? Again, it’s kinda subjective, as some people like light phones, while others prefer something more, erm, solid feeling. Heck, let’s give this one to the HTC Desire C.
The size thing is a matter of personal choice, while the memory thing can be addressed with a microSD card, leaving the Huawei Ascend G300 - when you look at the other three categories - as the clear winner.
When it comes to the things that matter, display, processor, and camera, there’s only one choice. Ladies and gentlemen, the Huawei Ascend G300 remains our favourite £100 smartphone.
