The original Huawei Ascend Mate was announced all the way back in January, so it's probably about time we started expecting a successor.
And here it is – the Huawei Ascend Mate 2, which has just leaked in picture form, together with some specs, over on HuaweiNews.com.
For starters, the good news: Huawei isn't going bigger than the original's already huge 6.1in screen size, but has improved the resolution up to a full HD 1920 x 1080.
The engine room will hold a Kirin910 chipset comprising a 1.6GHz quad-core Cortex-A9 processor, Mali 450 GPU and 2GB of RAM – not really enough of a step forward for 12 months, to be honest.
Storage space has been doubled from 8GB to 16GB, but we'd hope for better than the rumoured Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on a handset that will almost certainly launch into 2014.
As for the visuals, the pics aren't the best but they certainly reveal the Ascend Mate 2 as a rather chunky beast. On the plus side hopefully that means a huge battery along the lines of the original's 4050mAh cell.
We'd say the Ascend Mate 2 is all but certain to debut at CES 2014 in early January, the same venue that saw its predecessor announced at the start of this year.
And while Huawei typically gives you plenty of smartphone for your cash, the Ascend Mate 2 will have to be priced more aggressively than ever if such a gentle spec bump is going to pay off.
