Just over a month ago, I relayed Chinese whispers suggesting that the Windows Phone 8-flavoured Huawei Ascend W1 might launch at CES 2013.
Now, with Christmas around the corner, we have confirmation that the Windows Phone 8-flavoured Huawei Ascend W1 will launch at CES 2013. Lovely.
The news comes via Weibo, essentially an incredibly popular Chinese Facebook/twitter hybrid.
Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, says – in addition to teasing an Ascend D2 – “another will publish WindowPhone8 W1”.
Now, Huawei Ascend W1 specs aren’t worth getting too excited about. They include a 4in display (480 x 800), 5MP rear camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and 512MB of RAM.
What we're really interested in is the Huawei Ascend W1’s price tag. On paper, the W1 is pretty much the Windows Phone 8-based Huawei Ascend G330. But can it match – or even beat – its Android-based brother on price?
A recent rumour proposed the Huawei Ascend W1 price might come in as low as £125, but we’re thinking initial estimates of £200 are more likely – leaving Windows Phone 7.8 room to manoeuvre around the £100 mark.
We’ll find out for sure come CES 2013, which opens its doors on January 8.
