Okay.
Is she a talker or texter?
Does she use social nOtworks like Twitter or Farcebook?
Is she an emailer?
Does she like photos?
Does she like music or video on-the-go?
Does she know what Angry Birds are?
Does she mostly idle near a socket or does she rely on decent battery life?

Thankyou for asking the correct questions.

She would use fb and the like but she barely uses it in the house so not important.
A camera would be used. She uses her phone she has the now to listen to albums.

In the end it comes down to price, in my book.

Nothing to testing too.

Thanks for your time JanSt.

Folks here will disagree, but maybe, instead of a smartphone, consider one of Nokia's new Asha phones? They are really fast, "almost-smartphone-ish", have decent (for their price) cameras, FB integrated, and pretty good built quality...

I don't know much about budget Android phones, to be honest.
Or, maybe you can get a cheap HP Pre 3? It's an excellent phone, and here in Ireland they are traded for €150-ish... (because HP ditched webOS)

Samsung mobiles are very good, i would try and go for one with android that way your wife can download enless usefull apps whilst learning about smartphone tech, lets face it the world is moving on, how about a galaxy ace http://www.rightmobilephone.co.uk/Compare-PAYG_Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-S5830_1371_Pay-As-You-Go.html for example, dead easy to use looks good and is going cheap whilst still having all the great features of a top spec smart phone.

Is the Xperia Ray still £150 at p4u instore if so that wouldn't be a bad call.
The Nokia 710 maybe.

matt101101 / MOD  Apr. 23, 2012 at 22:14

Huawei G300 or the Nokia Lumia 710 would be my suggestions, £100 and £120 respectively.

Or an Asha S40 phone as Jan suggested, they're like 75% smartphones but with the advantage of being easier to use and having better battery life.

Pondlife  Apr. 23, 2012 at 22:20

I was thinking the G300 but the camera isn't great.
Do those Asha ones all have old school buttons though, like in Jan's link? I'd say that was a downside. meh.

Here's a G300 camera review, seems perfectly acceptable for everyday use to me.

EDIT: Damn, I forgot to include the link :p

If all our days were as bright as that yeah seems more than ok. :)
Just saw some on modaco weren't overly impressed with the camera.

Zeusola  Apr. 24, 2012 at 18:51

im about to go through the links in a second...

Thankyous first. I am pleased and pleasantly astounded at the feedback.

I'd give you all a bite of ma mars bar, so I would.

Worth looking at the HTC Wildfire S.
My wife was in a similar boat to yours. I wanted to introduce her into the touch screen smart phone market. She is no techy but she got into it pretty quickly and uses the web and FB on it now and again.
It is a nice compact size which is important to some ladies and has access to plenty of apps via google play (app market) which you will not get with the Nokia phones. Not the best camera in the world by any means but it does the job.

Hope that helps

Well if he wants a low quality slightly overpriced android phone that's a good fit. But there's 3 better android phones mentioned above.

newmann  Apr. 24, 2012 at 19:28

Just because a phone is deemed 'better' does that make it better for everyone? I was simply giving another option which may suit if his wife is anything like mine. But keep those constructive posts coming ay!

Pondlife  Apr. 24, 2012 at 20:15

Anyway I see the Ace has gone up 20% since it was in an article on here.
A lot of the prices are dependant on which network so is that fixed?

Zeusola  Apr. 25, 2012 at 01:28

im hoping that one of the aforementioned mobies comes up on hukd. Make my life easier.

She already has one of they fandabbydozy tesco sims so ill joost be after the phone itself too.

I'm a toy boy so, if yae think on it, me seeing her OK would then come back at me in 2 year.lol

Her birthday is the 8th of May so this gies me some leeway to find out some more.

Thanks again.

CTPAHHIK  Apr. 25, 2012 at 08:23

Hard to find something right now for under £150. I would not recommend Ace or Wildfire, both are overpriced phones at this point.
What happened to Liquid Metal? Is that still around? It seems like a better buy than the other two.

Liquid Metal's been out of stock for a few weeks. I'd say they're gone now...

If you are buying the Ace wouldn't buy it at Amazon, get it on o2 payandgo on their website £129.99. Won't need unlocking to use on tesco mobile, just throw o2 sim away unless has credit on it. :)

Car charger I paid 99p for the ones I bought. Presume it's standard micro usb.
Case looks decent enough, though I think that flap would be in the way a bit.
The nokia 710 is on hukd (135 on vodafone with topup, unlocked to all networks), the huawei g300 is on there at 100 (online or 110 including top up again o vodafone but that one is locked, unlock codes only £8.50 on ebay though) the ace was on hukd at £99 but doesn't seem to be at that price anywhere atm.

Pondlife  Apr. 25, 2012 at 14:42

Oh and they'll all use micro sd memory cards, for such light use 4gb or 8gb which come up dirt cheap on hukd would be fine.

madstock  Apr. 25, 2012 at 18:14

For ease of use, calls, music, camera and Facebook I would personally look no further than the Lumia 710 at that price point, particularly if "nothing too testing" was your top criteria.

corgi74  Apr. 25, 2012 at 18:18

Lumia 710

coerce86  Apr. 25, 2012 at 19:00

i'd consider looking at the orange sf2 (it's sub £100 though) plus an sd card from somewhere

(i'm also surprised no one has mentioned blackberry curves yet?)

AhmadCentral  Apr. 25, 2012 at 19:18

In my opinion-

If you want something that just works out of the box with music, facebook and calls/texts then you can't go wrong with a Nokia Lumia 710 which you can get for £149 on o2 which will work with tesco. The interface is very easy to use and the camera is pretty good as well as battery life. It also integrates very well with a windows PC in terms of transferring files and music and documents.

However, it should be known that the phone does not have a micro SD Card slot and does not have a lot of applications like you can get on android e.g fun games and apps like instagram etc... But for basic apps and usage windows phone is great.

The second Phone i recommend is the Huawei g300 which is on Vodafone and you'd have to unlock it first to use on tesco. It runs android which has all the apps you'll need and is very easy to use. There is a micro sd card slot and the battery life is alright. Its larger than the 710 by about 0.3 inches so you get bigger screen space but that does increase the bulk of the phone.

The camera on this phone is not very good and nor is the external speaker. However with a headset its fine. Its a great budget phone that does it all and you can get it for around £100 (locked) and then unlock it.

The third phone i'd recommend is the Samsung Galaxy Ace, its smaller than both phones above and although its not exactly as fast or up to date as the others i've mentioned it's small, reliable and easy to use. It has a nice design and has all the features you've asked for including a pretty good camera. It might not be the best phone if she's planning on using the web/watching flash videos a lot as its not good for that.

To be honest this phone is a bit out of date and doesn't have the best screen resolution or speed, but as a budget phone you can't fault it. It'll do everything you say you need it for.

If you want something less expensive and more on a budget end then the final phone i recommend is the Nokia Asha 300. Now its not a smartphone with all touchscreen so if you prefer a full touchscreen phone stop reading.

This phone is basically a touch and type device. It has a touch screen at the top and a physical slim style keyboard at the bottom. its easy to use and text on and it has internet access and a really nice camera. Music will work just fine here and it accepts a micro SD card.

Only thing is that the software is symbian, not android. So it won't have all the apps like android does. However like i said for the 710, if you're not worried about all those 500K+ apps then this is a great phone. The camera isn't that high end but it'll do for the occasional picture and video. Also this phone does not have wi-fi so you'll need a data plan to use the internet/facebook. You can pick it up quite cheap i think.

p.s if you're wondering why this is so long, its because i had some work to do and needed to find someway of procrastinating. Hope you enjoy the read :P
