From rumour-flavoured whispers to balls-out spoiler press releases from various manufacturers, we’ve got a pretty good sense of what to expect from this year’s IFA trade show in Berlin, and it's looking like a significantly more exciting event than February's MWC 2013.
Officially, IFA 2013 gets underway on Friday, September 6, but a handful of manufacturers are primed to explode with events as soon as tomorrow, so what better time to pen our final IFA 2013 preview?
How shall we do this? Alphabetically by manufacturer? You go it. Rumoured devices I’ll stick in orange, and confirmed devices I’ll colour green. Ready? Let's dance.
Yep, Acer has confirmed these two for IFA 2013. The Acer Liquid S2 in particular sounds pretty impressive, after the fairly run-of-the-mill Acer Liquid S1. Specs include a 6in HD IPS display, 13MP rear camera and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and the Acer Liquid S2 proudly claims to be the world's first smartphone with 4K video capture (for what it's worth).
- Archos Platinum tablets (3?)
- Archos Xenon tablets (3)
- Archos 101xs2 tablet
- Archos ChildPad
- Archos GamePad 2
- Archos Oxygen smartphone range
- Archos Platinum and Titanium phones
French manufacturer Archos recently fired out a colossal press release detailing its “year-end” plans, and we can expect to learn more about at least some of the above at IFA 2013.
- Asus PadFone mini
- Asus FonePad HD 7
- Asus MeMOFone HD 5
- Asus Transformer Pad HD
- Asus Transformer Pad FHD
- Asus MeMO Pad HD 8
Asus has been enjoying an IFA 2013 countdown over on Facebook, thought it doesn’t give much away, other than promising to “transform” a bunch of stuff. New Asus Transformer, anyone?
The above device list is ripped from a recently leaked Asus roadmap, though it’s very much unconfirmed at this stage.
The HTC Zara has just materialised as the HTC Desire 601 (alongside the HTC Desire 300), but we’re not entirely sure if we should expect the 5.9in HTC One Max at IFA 2013. Fingers crossed…
If/when it touches down, the HTC One Max will be the Taiwanese manufacturer's first "phablet" device (sitting somewhere between phone and tablet), and it's tipped to have a rear fingerprint scanner.
As per tradition, South Korean manufacturer LG has fired out a press release detailing its trade show wares in black and white ahead of the game. I say wares; it looks like it’s pretty much just the LG G Pad 8.3 at IFA 2013. Sounds decent enough. Indeed, LG reckons it's found the "optimum size of a tablet".
We all knew to expect the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 at IFA 2013, and the South Koreans have kindly confirmed their plans. Expect to meet both devices in the flesh tomorrow evening.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear looks destined to beat the Apple iWatch to market, though the jury's still out on who that benefits.
As for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, expect it to come in around the 5.7in mark, with suitably face-punching specs.
Just a few hours before Samsung’s IFA 2013 event, Sony has promised to lift the lid on, er, something, and we’ll eat our collective Mobo-hat if that something isn’t the Sony Xperia Z1.
The third high-end device from the Japanese manufacturer this year, the Sony Xperia Z1 combines the Xperia Z’s 5in 1080p display with the Xperia Z Ultra’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and tops things off with a 20.7MP rear camera.
