What's the best Android app for sending instant messages?

Well, mate, that depends who you want to send it to!
Your contacts need to be using the same service. A good Yahoo chat app is irrelevant if none of your friends use yahoo chat. Same goes for Skype, live, whatsapp etc etc... If all your friends use BlacckBerry's BBM, then NO Android app is good.
So, your first step is to check out what your folks are up to...

Since 750million (ish), people use Facebook nowadays Facebook Messenger is probably a safe bet. Though as Jan says it really depends what services the people you talk to use.
If that happens to be BBM, you're screwed, to put it bluntly.
