How do I know who has iMessage on my iPad???

On my new iPad, I get the option to add iMessage contacts via email address (it's imported my Yahoo! contacts). But how do I know who has iMessage? And how does it get to them via email?!

I might be wrong, but afaik, they'll get an iMessage if they have iMessage or an email if not....

I just don't get the point of instant message services on phones or computers when you have perfectly good services like sms and email. I'm sure people would have their reasons for using it over either of the other services though.

The point is that BBM is "virtually" free and unlimited. The little amount of data used makes no dent in anyone's data allowance. iMessage is similar. BBM is therefore the only reason BlackBerry phones have become such a hit with verbose teens....
