Installing iOS 8, 4GB required, do I get the space back?

If I clear 4GB to install iOS 8, does the update use up all that space, or do I get some back? I've only got a 16GB iPhone 4S!

You will get the space back. The excessive space is only required during the install - to unpack the iOS 8 package.
You should just update via the PC and iTunes. It's better for a number of reasons. Among those reasons: that way, iTunes prepares the downloaded update package on your PC, and you may not need to clear any space at all.
Lastly: Unless you have pressing reason, I would not update to iOS 8 at all - not an iPhone 4S or 4. You will see a bit of a struggle. The only advantage: Apple fixed a lot of security issues...
