Why no iOS 6 for the first gen iPad?

Is the iPhone 3GS more capable than the first gen iPad??

iPad, 1st gen; 1GHz processor, 256MB RAM

iPhone 3GS; 600MHz processor, 256MB RAM

iPod Touch 3rd Generation; 600MHz processor, 256MB RAM

iPod Touch 4th Generation; 800MHz Processor, 256MB RAM

Four devices, all with 256MB RAM. Two can run iOS6, two can't. The two that can't have one thing in common; they're no longer sold by Apple.

That's the reason right there. It's pure greed; by not upgrading the 3rd Gen iPod Touch and 1st Gen iPad to iOS6 they give users another reason to upgrade. If (and it's a big 'if') performance on the 3GS is up to scratch then there's no reason why the other devices couldn't run it. Then again, this is Apple. They seem to have a talent for making the simplest of new features destroy performance on older devices. The 3GS could well run like a no-legged-duck...

Could be that extra power for displaying at the higher res is the issue for the ipad. Especially for the maps bit. The 3g touch (>8gb) is weirder as has same gpu as 3gs too.
Must be said I'm not seeing it as a reason to upgrade anyway.
