iOS5 takes up too much space on 3GS

I have iOS5 on my 3GS and when I sync the iPhone it overflows the available memory. Before I updated I had 1Gb free memory on the phone. After updating I was 1Gb short and had to get rid of photos, videos and music to make room. Now, after having nearly 0.5Gb free today I am 0.2Gb over after syncing the phone.
I have tried to do a restore (despite losing hard-won phone numbers) but the situation remains... any ideas?

Try a reinstall?
Seems a bit odd, indeed, but on a device like an iPhone once you have less than a GB free, you enter "pushing it a bit" territory. It's really not ideal to fill it all the way.
That is why I'm staying away from phones without sd card expansion.
An 8 GB phone does NOT give you 8 GB storage. And iOS is quite chunky.

But your free space seems to change over night, so it's possible your update didn't go so well. So, a reinstall maybe...

Yes, I thought so too.. and did it last night just after I posted. Suddenly I was again 0.6Gb over the limit and had to get rid of more music etc... I had already gotten rid of all the photos and videos in the first round of slimming.
I don't think there's a way to revert to iOS4 but even if there was I would still have to rebuild what I had - which despite only having 1Gb free, worked just the way I wanted it to.
Thanks for the tip, though, and I'll have another go when I feel stronger!

Maybe try restoring and then just syncing parts of your library - like just a GIG of music... Then see if there is a discrepancy between what's on the phone, mand what you think there should be.

Good luck

Did a restore this morning to a backup from before the ios5 update and I now have 0.42Gb free and 11.7Gb tunes... I really can't work this out as I've just done a sync and free space is down to 0.2Gb and other has risen to 0.98Gb from 0.47Gb!

weird O_o
I had a look around the old Google and haven't come across anything like it...

Have you got wireless sync on? Maybe your iPhone is resyncing with you realising.

...or even "without" :p ;)

No, that makes too much sense, that's not my style.

Nope, no wireless syncing. There was a bit of a foul-up on upgrading to iOS5 - I generally download the file and then upgrade after a few minutes once the sync and everything else is out of the way; this time it just launched straight off and seemed to hit a couple of problems before hiccuping through to the finish. That's why I did the first (of many) restores and then skipped using the back-up to do a fresh install.
Stumped... I may end up in the Genius bar (however, the staff at my nearest one - I live in France - are a bit keen on 'advising' you to get a new phone.
Thanks for the thoughts!

Again, good luck :) And let us know how you're getting on ;) (might be interesting for other users)

After going and restoring Apple Mobile Device, Bonjour and Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all I still have the tunes taking up much more space than they did previously but at least the phone seems to be stable; with about 0.3Gb of space after a couple of syncs. Other is still high at 0.9Gb but I think it's really up to Apple to recognise there's a problem... so I've left a plea on the support website. Surprised I did that, as I don't believe in fairies or the Loch Ness monster...

Apple support is pretty good in my experience if you can sift through some ambiguous and copy/paste replies. Keep us informed if you find anything out! :)
