It's iPad 2 launch day, and that means we're all occupied with thinking about... well, the iPad 2 as it happens. And we're not alone. Word has spread quickly of a brief appearance of the next-gen Apple slab on Amazon Germany, and it gives a sneak peak at a couple of juicy specs.
But that's not all. An Apple staff member tells us we shouldn't be getting too excited about the iPad 2 anyway, because it's the iPad 3 that's really packing a knockout blow to the tablet competition.
We're guessing someone at Amazon.de may have ended up in a bit of hot water earlier today, as a listing for the 16GB iPad 2 was very briefly added to the listings – accidentally or otherwise – and spotted by Your Apple Daily before being quickly yanked down again.
Presumably this happened before Your Apple Daily's source was able to click through to the full product page, as there's only the basic description to go on for a glimpse at the vital statistics. Still, it does reveal that the next-gen slate will have a 1.2GHz processor and Thunderbolt connectivity, as well as a camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G.
So no real bombshells there, and to be honest we're not expecting too many later today at the official unveiling either. But that's OK, says one Apple staffer, as the real highlights are coming with the iPad 3.
Seasoned Apple observer and author Leander Kahney says a source inside Apple has given him the skinny on the iPad 2, and says it is a “ho-hum update…more of a speed bump than a redesign” before adding that the “iPad 3 is the one to get excited about and it’s on track for release later this year”.
“For the iPad 2,” he claims, “don’t get your hopes up too high. That’s all I’m going to say. They’ve had a number of problems along the way and the third-generation iPad is the one to make a song and dance about.”
