The new iPad is here

The new iPad is hereWell, today’s the day, folks. March 16, 2012 marks the arrival of the device with the stupidest name ever (ok, maybe not quite).

Yep, it’s the new iPad, or iPad third gen, successor to the iPad 2, with all the very slight improvements we’ve come to expect from a spanking new iDevice.

It’s early days, but we’re not hearing any stories of in-store punch-ups just yet. Why anyone would bother trying to grab the new iPad from the Apple store on launch day when it was available to pre-order is beyond me.

Mind you, there’ll inevitably be those who missed the boat before the shipping time leapt to 2-3 weeks, alongside hordes of new iPad diehards who can’t be bothered sitting around waiting for a courier. Me first! Me first!

The new iPad grabs the price baton from the iPad 2, so that’s:

  • 16GB Wi-Fi only - £399
  • 16GB Wi-Fi and 4G - £499
  • 32GB Wi-Fi only - £479
  • 32GB Wi-Fi and 4G - £579
  • 64GB Wi-Fi only - £559
  • 64GB Wi-Fi and 4G - £659

If you fancy a data bundle, we did a little story on Three Mobile’s new iPad tariffs yesterday. Check it.

Very slight improvements?

Entirely new display, new cellular radios, 70% larger battery, new SoC with double the RAM, Bluetooth 4, vastly improved camera. As slight as iPhone 4 -> 4S for sure!

Maybe they should have put it in a case shaped like a vase to emphasise the newness? :-P

The name, by the way, is just iPad. 'The new iPad' is only used when pointing out that it is new/to differentiate from iPad 2. See http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

As far as Joe Average is concerned, the only thing that matters is the display. The larger battery yields similar battery life, and personally I don't expect to use the Bluetooth or take many - if any - pictures.

The title of that page is: 'Apple - The new iPad - View all the technical specifications', and I received an email this morning with the subject: 'The new iPad is here'.

I know what you mean though, I imagine the box won't say 'the new iPad'. Or will it? I'll let you know! ;)

having seen a post that someone just put on hukd I'm left thinking it's going to be a while before it's as impressive as it's potential. If that's the best 24....

I pre-ordered with Apple but, despite ordering at 10am March 8th, because I chose the finance option I was punished and not just pushed back a few days to the 21st like a lot of users were, I got pushed back till 2nd April. Punished, sigh. On the other hand, Tesco had loads in at 4pm yesterday as did other local third party retailers. I could have got them from Currys as well if I wanted but, opted to get 16GB white and 16GB black from Tesco. Heck they even had an announcement about 4:30 saying they had them in stock and I rang around 3:30 to see what they had....more than Apple :p. Every model in fact. No need to queue up :).

The distribution of these does seem odd.

Does make me laugh thinking of that guy who queued up for over a day to get one.
