Why does my iPad need so much free memory to install the NOVA 3 update?

2.2GB free on my iPad but can't install the NOVA 3 update (there are a couple of others pending too). That's more space than the game itself!

Yep, as Matt said. The downloaded file needs to be unpacked... so you need space to copy other files to, and then put them all back together. It's no different on most PCs. You cannot install a 1GB program if 1GB is all the space you have. You can't unpack your shopping bag inside the shopping bag ;)

If space is an issue, download the app to your PC via iTunes. Itunes prepares the package, and the install takes less space.

Jan's right, the same issue would occur on a PC, too, but most people don't fill their PC hard drive to anywhere near the same percentage fullness that they do their tablet or phone memory, so they never see the problem.

I think Windows starts to complain if your hard drive (C drive, anyway) is more than 85% full.

Something about extracting files and then deleting the installer as part of the installation process means that at some point during the installation of the game the space required is actually more than that of the game when it's fully installed.
