Daring Fireball’s John Gruber is thought to be fairly in the know when it comes to Apple goodies. Indeed, he was talking quite matter-of-factly about the iPad 3’s 2048 x 1536 Retina display way back in July 2011.
Gruber reckons a 7.85in iPad mini is being toyed with in Apple's top secret labs. He says: ”I’ve heard from numerous people that that’s one of the ideas that they’re noodling with.”
In terms of dimensions, the iPad mini would be roughly as tall as the new iPad is wide, at 7.3in. It's also thought to have the same resolution as the first two iPads, namely 1024 x 768, however the smaller screen size would obviously yield a higher DPI.
Having mocked up an iPad mini display, John observes: “There are a couple of areas where I think text is maybe a little too small, but it’s not ridiculously small.” Well, the iPad mini would be far from the smallest tablet on the market.
It’s unclear if Apple will forge ahead with the iPad mini, or if Team Cupertino is waiting to see what happens with this supposed budget Nexus tablet that’s tipped for a Q2 release.
In theory, we could see Apple debut the iPad mini at WWDC in June. ‘Citing.
