Can I use my iPad as a second screen for my MacBook?

I find myself constantly tabbing around and jumping between programs on my MacBook and had a brainwave: is it possible to use my iPad as a "second screen"? Coming soon to iOS 12 maybe? ;)

Matt's a known Apple hater.... Always lying :p hahaha

There's a new app called Duet Display. It can, indeed, turn your iPad or iPhone into a second display for your Mac. A version for Windows PCs is in the works.
Duet Display DOES NOT require jailbreak. In fact, it's been coded by former Apple engineers and - I suppose - some Hogwarts alumni...

Check it out http://www.duetdisplay.com/
It's not free, but it's cheaper than a 2nd monitor with touch. :)

Mac OS - your desktop - works perfectly fine using the connected iPAD. There is zero noticeable lag or delay. You can start apps, open folders etc using touch on the iPad.
The iPad's keyboard however doesn't deploy... For typing duties you still use the Mac's hardware keyboard. I hope in future they make it possible to use the iPad's onscreen keyboard.
Is it worth 10 bucks or thereabouts? IMHO yes. But: if you don't really need it then no... As always.

That is a quality app; a portable, very high quality 2nd display is a fantastic idea for any laptop. If I had an iPad, I'd get the upcoming WIndows version of the app, just for the odd occasions I need the extra screen real estate.

As for tying on the computer, that's exactly what you'd do with any other 2nd display, also, it's much easier to type on a proper laptop keyboard than it is on some onscreen touch-keyboard.

True - the proper keyboard and touchpad are the better way.
Not a big issue...

That is genuinely awesome. When they get the windows version working it could be pretty useful for if i have to travel and need to actually get any work done (i never feel productive on a laptop simply because i can't *see* enough and don't have the cash to get anything better!)

Curiously, I forgot to keep an eye on battery usage. Must do that, I suppose.

Resource demand of Duet Display is very very pleasant. I tried it on a 2011 Macbook Air with an iPad Air (!)... No problem. Using the hog that is iPhoto and the Picasa app to sort photos and camera videos? I expected some sort of cataclysmic event... but both devices happily ticked along...
When I can pry the iPad from my BH's clutches, I'll see how far I get with both devices on battery alone...

Well both the iPad and MacBooks have quite good battery life, so it doesn't surprise me that, when combined as one device, their battery lives are still perfectly acceptable.

True... Though, that 11in Macbook Air is 3 years old, and got some heavy abuse - still on original battery.
