Does the new iPad support mkv files?

Can you play mkv files on the new iPad?

From Apple's website:

"Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format"

Doesn't look like it.

Nope, natively the new iPad (like, sadly, most devices) does not support MKV.
GoodPlayer for iOS does http://www.hustmobile.com/goodplayer/

However, as with all video containers, not all files may actually play. It depends on exact encoding.
But I have used plenty of vids encoded with Handbreak's mkv presets - they all played in GoodPlayer.

GoodPlayer? Hope they didn't spend too long brainstorming that name :p What's next, GoodGame, GoodClock, GoodWidget and GoodFartApp?

No GoodPlayer jokes - it's excellent :p

There IS GoodReader, also. It's a good reader ;)
