Was there an iPhone before the 2G?

Was there an iPhone before the 2G? If not, why is it called the 2G??!!??

2G network, not 2nd generation. It wasn't called the 2G until the 3G was released, before that it was simply called the iPhone. Oh and, yes, the 2G, as it's now known, was the first iPhone.

There have been 4 iterations of the iPhone:

iPhone (or 2G as it's known now)
iPhone 3G (due to it's 3G network capabilities)
iPhone 3GS (a "souped up", version of the 3G, with the same body style)
iPhone 4 (latest version, soon to be replaced by the iPhone 5)
