A huge sensor would certainly give Apple the upper-hand. Compact camera quality in a smartphone would be great. The amount of noise and compression in smartphone cameras is pretty dreadful these days. The race for more megapixels makes the situation worse.

The htc my touch 4g has a camera which is supposedly comparable to a compact apparently.

Shame that it doesn't run a full version of Sense and if you want one in the UK, you'd have to import it :(

Good review here of the myTouch's camera.

Seems to have the same kind of BSI sensor that the new WP7 HTCs have but it's still lacking in a few places, namely colour accuracy and noise in low-light shots. Steps in the right direction though, as HTC has previously blurred the crap out of all the photos just to make it look nice at lower resolutions. Battery life also sucks, which I'm pretty confident won't be a problem on the iPhone 4S.

blizz. now common... battery has always sucked on iphones...

Phone cameras will never be great, optical zoom, is a must for a "proper", camera. The iPhone 4 camera is pretty good, especially considering how awful the original iPhone's camera was haha :D. Hopefully the iPhone 4S/5 (lets not get into that one), will be even better.

blizzard7  Sep. 23, 2011 at 16:00

Yup, the iPhone's camera was a joke. Digital zoom is the devil, but cropping a high quality photo is an okay workaround for zoom.
Pretty sure the iPhone 4 has better battery life than most Android phones.

Treab  Sep. 23, 2011 at 16:02

not exactly hard... but no smartphone has a battery i would dare consider 'good'

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 23, 2011 at 16:10

@Blizzard, as was the 3G's camera, it was the same 2mp blur-fest as the original iPhone. The 3GS was OK, average, nondescript, but at least not awful.

@Treab, everything has better battery life than most Android phones, bar the Atrix with it's massive battery. The iPhone 4's battery life is about 1.5x to 2x that of my SGS2's...ouch.

Treab  Sep. 23, 2011 at 16:15

tbf thats not a fair comparison matt... most things have a better battery than your sgs...

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 23, 2011 at 16:26

I meant stock battery life, not after my...."fiddling", with it :p.

Agree with...uh...one of you: iPhone 4, I'm sorry to say, beat every Android device I ever used :(

Obviously, only BBs and Symbians offer decent juice. Unless Anna totally f*cks up your C7 $#*[email protected]$®€^¥£

jan the banker we both know your mad...

iPhone does have a big advantage in terms of having tightly-knit software to get the best of the hardware. It's where the restrictive nature of iOS pays off, same as Nokias and BBs. Android is all over the shop in that regard. It's repeatedly getting hit with faster processors and more complicated skins which are playing their part in obliterating the battery life.

I don't think even the most senior member of the Android Defence League can say that a good 'droid can touch any of those other phones in regards to battery life.

Lets be fair they all have their good points and bad points.. see my table below...

apple good - secure ease of use. bad - too secure leading most to jailbreak their own phones.. expensive games, phone, developer kits (30% of sales compared to is it 3% on android?)

Blackberry, good - email BBM not power intensive bad - phones can seem a little out of date in terms of looks the curve looks the same for 10 years.. can be a little expensive... the new 9900 is around the same price as the iphone 4 on payg.

Android good - open platform, games often free due to advertising, simplistic at times complicated for those who want it. bad - battery intensive can be too much choice sammy has announced 7 phones in the last 3 months.. add on htc lg and moto...

symbian good - umm... umm... umm... well nokia hasnt abandoned it yet... bad - nokia hasnt abandoned it yet ;)

windows good - look (imo) i like the main screen look base level hardware ensuring every app works. bad - base level hardware prevents evolution look some truely hate it price can be sold as the same price as android for lower spec phones with fewer apps which prevents customer base from growing.. needs a good firesale to boost the numbers to bring in followers...
